You may be thinking about a website for your business or a new business idea that you have… lots of people are. Or, you may already have a website and be thinking, "Do I need to make a change?"
I could tell you what I think, but that would be just one more talking head telling you what to do, so…
Ask yourself the following:
Imagine you are looking for a high-dollar product or professional service like a lawyer, a car, a secondary education, a software package or whatever other thing you might think of.
Now, what's the first thing you are going to do?
- Ask a friend or colleague to make a recommendation?
- Research online?
- Go with someone or something you've seen or heard a lot about
Great. You've done that. Now what?
If you went online first, well then there's your answer as to the importance of the website. If, however, you asked the friend or went with something/someone you were familiar with, then ask yourself this, “Did I go online just to check out the website before calling or going? I mean, just to be sure?”
If you answered no, you're probably in the 25% of buyers who live life by the cuff and make quick buying decisions. The rest of us who are less sure or simply want to make sure our decision is justified will do the extra homework. Most likely in today's world this will be online.
Now the hard part – how important is the web design? i.e. Does the design of the website you just visited impact your buying decision?
Answer: You tell me.
If the site looked dated, from the 1990s, was too cluttered with junky looking ads, you just couldn't find the information you were looking for, or it just looked plain old cheap or cheesy – how did you feel? Did you question your buying decision? Did you hesitate to request more information? Did you go somewhere else to compare?
This is exactly what your client or customer will do if your web design is not up to par.
How do you make sure your web site:
- looks professional
- shows you are a trustworthy business
- comforts and informs your client or customer, and
- encourages them to “contact us” or simply “buy now”?
