While there's been a little bit of buzz this past week on the inter-webs, the shear lack of talk and activity around this issue has really surprised me. Google's latest algorithm update, vaguely explained on their site here, has significant consequences for many sites online.
While mobile-friendliness and mobile-responsive design are nothing new at this point, MANY sites still think mobile-friendly means it doesn't break when you're viewing it on a mobile device. Sorry guys - takes more these days to cut the mustard. If your site still involves pinch-and-zoom action, or just doesn't contain a scan-able home page with either an accompanying m. site or a fully mobile-responsive design, then you've got problems!
Here's what is known about this significant update:
- It's world-wide; while some of Google's algorithm updates affect only certain areas, this one covers the entire grid
- It's focused on mobile browsers. While you may be glad to hear that it won't affect "regular" search results, think again! Mobile browsing has surpassed laptop/desktop browsing these days
- It also affects app results. A smaller portion to be sure, but add it to the mass of mobile traffic, and it's icing on an overly-rich cake you're either loving the heck out of right now, or just getting sick off its sugary overload.
- It's all or nothing. There is no middle ground. Sides MUST be chosen. Victory or death! If your site doesn't pass this test, expect your results to suffer.
So what should any normal, self-respecting business owner or marketing manager do?
Take the test. If your site fails, YOU NEED TO TAKE ACTION. Luckily, the team at TradeMark Advertising has gobs of experience creating beautiful mobile-responsive web designs that pass the Google test with flying colors.
It might even impress some of your old customers or clients that were previously bored to death with your blasé site. Hey, it might even be that perfect excuse you've been looking for to get that long-overdue website face-lift that brings your site into the modern-day era.
