Everyone has seen the typical movie posters:
- Man standing front and center something exploding in the background.
- Woman front and center looking over her shoulder at you.
- People sitting on a bench ect...
But every once in a while there are more unique/interesting movie posters. Whether the movie is as good as the poster is another story.
Below is a list of my favorite movie posters from 2014.
#10 - I Origins
This poster communicates so much about the movie while remaining slightly abstract. There are so many plot layers and concepts conveyed in the movie title and the macro photograph of this specific characters eye.
#9 - X-Men Days of Future Past
These movie posters cleverly show just how good the casting choices are for the young version of the main characters. They do this by using the iconic "X" to compare the original X-Men cast with the new younger castings for their past self.
#8 - The Monuments Men
This poster shows the interesting faces of the main characters which is fairly overdone, but their great use of composition, color and typography makes this one of my favorites or 2014.
#7 - Big Hero 6
Robots can feel cold, alien and scary, but Baymax is none of those things. He is cute, soft and friendly. This poster is as friendly as it is well composed. Baymax peeks into frame placing his head in the center of the top third of the poster with the release date just to the left. And to balance the what would have been a top/left heavy composition they place the bold red logo at the bottom right. The result is perfectly balanced and ultra friendly.
#6 - Big Eyes
This poster effectively communicates nearly everything you need to know before watching the movie. Right in the center of the poster is a painting of a girl with big eyes. Holding that painting is the artist with a vaguely troubled look on her face. Holding the picture of the artist holding the painting is a very proud/michevious Christoph Waltz. The poster does a great job at conveying the main theme of the film.
#5 - Godzilla
Apart from having one of the best teaser trailers, Godzilla also had some really great movie posters. This one perfectly shows the scale of the monster while barely even showing Godzilla at all. These are skydiving troops plunging toward this mysterious beast who is taller than the clouds. It doesn't get much more awesome than that!
#4 - Tusk
These posters are simple and to the point. One is slightly quirky, but remaining ominous and the other is completely unsettling. They are both very minimal and very effective.
#3 - A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night
A red background, mysterious shrouded figure and great type treatment are all delicious ingredients that make up this unique movie poster. The mysterious figure is a wonderful graphic representation of a shot only 25 seconds into the trailer. And if you haven't seen this trailer you need to watch it ASAP! I have never seen an Iranian Vampire Western before, but if this movie poster and the trailer are any indication, you won't want to miss it!
#2 - Frank
One thing I think this poster does really well is generate curiosity. The subtle grunge texture, solid teal background and giant stylized mask all draw me in and make me ask "why" and "what?." It's unique, interesting and simple.
#1 - Grand Budapest Hotel
I remember seeing this poster on the wall in the theater. It put the very grand hotel just below the center with the movie title placed right on top of it. Right above the hotel was a very short synopsis of the film, just enough to draw you in. Around the border were the very interesting faces of the different characters and one solitary key. I stood looking at the poster for about 15 minutes just soaking up the detail in each of these characters faces. This poster conveys Wes Andersons style perfectly. All of this makes this my #1 pic of 2014.
