Visa

Lets start off with the Visa redesign. This is a subtle, but nice redesign. They slightly tweaked the type, but the biggest difference is in the color change. They ditched the yellow on the "V" and went with an overall darker blue gradient. This was a subtle change and they stayed very recognizable.

Weather Underground

Next up is Weather Underground. They had a more drastic change, and it was for the better. The new logo is way less clip-arty and more… logo-y. They kept the core concepts behind the old logo, the rainbow and the rain drop, but they are a lot more modern and fun. This is another logo redesign using a gradient, but it would also look great in black and white.

Pizza Hut

Now lets look at the Pizza Hut redesign! I think this is great! They super slightly tweaked the type and kept the roof icon, but removed the 3D glossiness and placed in in a really nice circle that looks a little like a pepperoni and pizza sauce. Its a modern, flat and clean take on their already well known identity. To go with their logo redesign they have also revamped their menu! One of the items has a pretzel crust… I think it’s lunch time, BRB.

Olive Garden

Last, but not least, my personal favorite logo redesign of 2014… Olive Garden.
This is a complete overhaul of their old logo, but they managed to reference some of the core elements of their old logo as well. It has the same overall composition, but replaced the grapes with nicely crafted olive branches and cleaned up the loose scripty font. They got rid of the faux 3D, bevel and embossed, hand-painted look and went with a flatter and cleaner look.They are definitely shifting their target audience.

This looks less like a place you only go to when your grandparents are in town, and more like a place that… I dunno, you might actually choose to go to. 

My main concern with this redesign is that it looks very trendy. The “hand-type” look was very big last year and will probably be even more commonplace in 2015. How will we feel about that style in 2016 or 2018? It may feel overused and ubiquitous, but for now it’s very pretty.
